Can I afford a motorcycle?

You may have wanted a bike for a long time and put off purchasing one due to the reputation they have for being expensive to maintain. Motorcycles have a lot going in their favor: they are cheap to fill up, get great gas mileage, and emit smaller amounts of toxic exhaust into the environment. If you´re looking to reduce your use of a car but still have to travel significant distances to work, a motorcycle or moped might be a very smart consideration to make.

A recent study in France measured COČ emissions into the environment to see which transportation methods had the most environmental impact. Two of the biggest factors affecting rank was the amount of time it takes for each trip (time engine is running) and the size of the engine (larger being more environmentally offensive). Emissions were measured as number of COČ grams per kilometer: remember the equivalent of one kilometer is roughly just over half a mile. Here were the results:

• Walking, Bicycles : 0

• Tram/Train : 20

• Moped : 65

• Bus : 80

• 125 cc motorcycle: 85

• 400 cc motorcycle : 115

• Car (unleaded fuel) : 115

• Car (diesel fuel) : 133

• Large displacement motorcycle : 160

• SUV : 205

• Small truck (less than 3.5 tons) diesel: 230

Don´t assume motorcycle insurance is automatically more expensive or higher risk than typical auto insurance. Rates are still based on the responsibility of the driver and their record of tickets or accidents.

Some factors that will make insurance rates higher:

• Marks on record: traffic violation tickets can remain your record for a number of years. Take seriously your maintaining a "safe driver" record. It can save a lot of money on insurance premiums over time.

• Sports bikes: vehicles for different purposes require different kinds of coverage. Make sure the bike or moped you are using is properly insured. The type should match the purpose.

• High performance, high output bikes: you don´t need a motorcycle designed for stunts on your highway commute. If you have a high performance bike, expect to pay higher premiums. These are more expensive options all around.

• Letting coverage seasonally lapse: if you have a loan on your bike you are required to carry insurance year round. But if you own your bike and decide to let coverage lapse during the winter, you are no longer eligible for renewal discounts. Normal premiums are designed with seasonality built in and there is still risk for your bike even in storage. Don´t let your coverage lapse for any reason in any season.
